BASF pauses Spanish battery recycling plant construction

The German chemical company announced in its half year results presentation that it will pause the construction of its battery material recovery plant in La Canonja, outside of Tarragona, Spain. The construction will not be restarted "cell capacity build-up and xEV adoption rate in Europe regain momentum".

In our battery recycling capacity database the plant was estimated to be commissioned in 2027 with an eventual capacity of 120,000 tonnes. We will now push this back to 2030. The company is however still expected to commission its so called pilot plant in Schwarzheide in Germany, which is estimated to be able to process 15,000 tonnes of cell equivalent materials.
