Wuhan Power Battery Generation, a subsidiary of Chinese battery recycling pioneer GEM, has announced that they will set up a joint venture with Upai Energy, a subsidiary of automotive company GAC in Guangzhou, in the Guangdong region. With a joint investment of 190M RMB ($26.25M) plant will have a capacity to dismantle 20,000 tonnes of EV battery packs per year per year and to produce 10,000 tonnes of black powder from battery production scrap.
The purpose with the joint venture which is named Guangzhou Youmei Regeneration Technology is to create a closed loop for GAC and for GEM to secure material for processing. This will enable GAC to increase the amount of recycled content in their batteries. GEM has its strongest position in NMC material which also is the primary target for the JV.
