The Swedish battery startup Northvolt which is constructing a 32 GWh battery plant in Northern Sweden and a 16GWh plant in Germany in joint venture with Volkswagen will together with Norsk Hydro, one of the world's leading aluminium producers, set up recycling plant for electric vehicles in Fredrikstad, Norway.
The plant will be used for disassembly of EV batteries, which will be done with a high level of automation, and for material separation (shredding). Norsk Hydro will then process the aluminium while Northvolt will process the black mass.
The plant will be operated by Batteriretur which is the largest battery collection organisation in Norway and largest EV collector in Europe today. The investment in the plant is estimated to 100 MNOK (10.6 MUSD). The joint venture will operate under the name HydroVolt.
