Sungeel opens it first pre-processing plant in the US

SungEel HiTech will launch commercial operations at its Indiana Recycling Park on March 17. The facility will process 20,000 tons of cell scrap annually, with plans to expand to 40,000 tons, enough for about 100,000 EVs. The black mass produced will be shipped to Saemangeum National Industrial Complex for further processing.


The Korean recycler SungEel Hi-Tech is set to begin operations at its first North American production facility in Indiana the 17th March. The new plant, located in Whitestown, boasts an annual capacity to process 20,000 tons of cell scrap.


The facility, spanning 13,632 square meters, positions SungEel Hi-Tech is located in a region fo the US where several battery makers such as Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution are setting up their plants.


The black mass and black powder produced at the plant will be shipped for further processing in Sungeel's new material recovery plant in Saemangeum National Industrial Complex, South Korea.


The company has invested $50M in the Indiana facility, following its establishment of SungEel Recycling Park Indiana in 2023. Future expansion plans include increasing processing capacity to 40,000 tones. Additionally, SungEel Hi-Tech is constructing another recycling plant in Stephens County, Georgia, with a $37M investment.


This is the first plant in North America for Sungeel. The recycler backed out from the construction of a plant in Endicott, New York in 2019 after several years of protests.
