The Chinese lithium producer, Ganfeng Lithium, is planning to open a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in Mexico. The aim is to source end-of-life batteries both domestically and from other Latin American countries such as Colombia where volumes of electric buses and cars are rapidly increasing.
Ganfeng which is one of the largest lithium producers in the world already operates two 17,000 tonnes recycling lines in China where they recycle both NMC and LFP batteries.
In September Mexico cut the import duty on used electric vehicles from 50% to 15%. This is not lease expected to enable import of used electric cars from China which has started to push for export.
