Volkswagen debuts pre-processing plant for EV batteries

In th

e end of January Volkswagen's 1,500 tpa pre-processing plant, which was announced in 2019, was commissioned. The plant, which is designed and erected by machine builder URT will be able to process 3,600 battery packs a year working in two shifts, equating to around 300 to 450 tonnes of black mass per year.

The feedstock will initially be made up by test batteries from the MEB platform but over time it is expected end-of-life batteries will be processed in the plant.

The technology used was developed in the German research project Lithorec from which also the plant of Duesenfeld originated.
